Collecting Your Dog's Hair

For Your Own Custom Handspinning

  • Brush, brush, brush! The best hair for spinning is brushed hair, not clipped, no matter what breed your dog is.
  • Fluff the brushings apart with your fingers before storing. The more separated the hairs are, the less likely they are to matt together before spinning.
  • Store the dog hair loosely in paper bags, not packed in plastic. The fiber needs to breath, and may matt together if stored in plastic.
  • Keep putting aside hair until you have enough for your desired project!

Cat hair makes wonderful yarn. You can collect and store it much like dog hair, but also check how much hair builds up on your cat's favorite sleeping spots.
